straight talk about wood finishing

Q: Since Zinsser shellac is formulated with isopropanol, it dries slowly, which I am having to get used to. I haven’t sprayed it yet but I’m betting it sprays well.
A: The primary solvent in Zinsser shellac is ethanol. There’s only a small amount of isopropanol, and I doubt it would affect drying time noticeably. However, I will tell you that the age of the shellac has a profound effect on drying time. As it gets older, it dries slower. I would definitely check the sell by date on the can if I were you. As for shellac spraying well, that is a matter of opinion. It can be touchy, though once you get used to its foibles and learn to avoid the potential problems, it is indeed a lovely material to spray.
