Q: Is shellac sanding sealer appropriate under aerosol cans of paint?
A: That depends on what you mean by shellac sanding sealer, and where the item will be used. Cans of liquid shellac typically have wax in them, which occurs naturally in shellac, and are not appropriate under some finishes. Zinsser SealCoat, which is actually dewaxed shellac, and Zinsser BIN, which is white dewaxed shellac, are both appropriate under most finishes, including paints, as long as the item is to be used indoors. They are not appropriate for exterior use. Almost all paints, aerosol or otherwise, have specific primers paired with them created by the same manufacturer. There’s a lot to be said for simply using the primer the manufacturer suggests.
