straight talk about wood finishing

Q: My wife wants a light cinnamon color for our bathroom vanity I’m building. However she doesn’t want it too yellow. I read in one of your books that purple will undo yellow. Should I custom make a dye stain with a bit of purple or tint the polyurethane with a bit of oil paint?

A: If you need to you can, but I think you may be jumping the gun a bit. Make samples of your stain and intended topcoat to see if you need to do anything at all. You may not have to, but certainly the easiest course of action is to choose a stain that, when paired with your topcoat, comes out just right. In other words, pick the right stain, or make your modifications at the stain level, and you will have an easier job of it.
