straight talk about wood finishing

Q: Can I use a waterbased polyurethane as a sealer coat prior to applying stain, or should I use something else?

A: Stain, by definition, is color applied to raw wood. Thus, you don’t use any sealer under it. While you can certainly use waterbased polyurethane as a sealer, it is not a particularly good one, and in any case, will block the ability of the wood to absorb the stain, causing it to either be wiped off or sit atop the sealer. Either way, you could be courting problems.
