Q: Can I make a glaze or toner with waterbased polyurethane? If so how should this be mixed for opaque and translucent results. Also how is this then applied?
A: Waterbased polyurethane would be a very poor base for a glaze, but it would make good toner. In fact, several companies, including Varathane, make waterbased polyurethane toners. A toner is simply tinted top
coat that you apply the same way as any topcoat. The difference is that each coat adds a layer of color in addition to protection. To mix your own, simply add water compatible pigments (universal or acrylic colors) in small amounts and mix it into the polyurethane.
Glaze is another animal entirely, and is both mixed and applied very differently. Because it is such a large topic, I’m going to recommend that you read up on it in one of my books instead of trying to cover it here. They contain information on what glaze is, how to use it and how to mix it.
Gentle reminder: A modest donation to this finishing blog can keep it going to help others. Thanks!
