Have you ever been frustrated trying to find just the right color of pigment stain for a project and coming up blank? Even with all the colors on the shelf, they just don’t seem to have the right one.
You could buy several cans and try to hit the color by mixing and matching, and if you are lucky, you might even end up without too much excess stain. Or you could by universal tinting colors and modify the stain until it is where you want it. But all this assumes you are good at mixing colors. (I’ll show you some tips on how to do that in a future article, OK?)
There is an easier way. When you think of it, pigmented stain is really just a thinner version of paint.
And the friendly folks at the paint counter will mix any color you want in amounts as low as one quart.
Go to that endless wall of color chips, find just the color you want, and ask them to mix a quart. You’ll get a perfect mixing job every time. Take it home and thin it with the proper solvent (water for latex paint, mineral spirits for oil based paint) and — Voila! — you have your wiping stain.
Gentle reminder: A modest donation to this finishing blog can keep it going to help others. Thanks!
